Poet Jacqui Germain interviewed by The Offing

October 27, 2023

Thanks to The Offing and Gauri Awasthi for the thoughtful interview with AHP poet Jacqui Germain regarding her debut collection, Bittering the Wound. Reflecting on the writing of her book, Jacqui says:

Before even really starting Bittering, I knew I wanted to write something that challenged the assumed primacy or authority of that observational gaze. There’s this presumption that people engaged in these local contexts should obviously want to prioritize making themselves legible to or rendered legitimate by national audiences, and I wanted to push back against that. I wanted to write poems in which St. Louis took St. Louis back for itself and wrote to itself, about itself.
