Winner of the 2024 Donald Justice Poetry Prize announced!

March 15, 2024

On behalf of the West Chester University Poetry Center, Autumn House is pleased to announce that Sunni Brown Wilkinson’s manuscript, Rodeo, has won the 2024 Donald Justice Poetry Prize judged by Patricia Smith! Of the collection, Smith says,

“. . . This book rises above a tough and formidable field simply by not needing to rise at all—the poet’s wry and revelatory stanzas ride high through minefields of love and heart-numbing loss before accompanying the reader on, in the poet’s own words, a slow descent into the heart of the world.

Sunni Brown Wilkinson is a poet and essayist. She is the author of the poetry collections The Marriage of the Moon and the Field (Black Lawrence Press) and The Ache & The Wing (winner of the Sundress Chapbook Prize). Her poetry has been awarded the New Ohio Review’s NORward Poetry Prize, the Joy Harjo Prize, and the Sherwin Howard Award. She teaches at Weber State University and lives in northern Utah with her husband and three sons.

Autumn House will publish Rodeo in our Spring 2025 season. Please join us in congratulating Sunni!

NB: The Donald Justice Prize is made possible through the generosity of the Iris N. Spencer Poetry Awards created by Kean W. Spencer.
